So It’s been a while since my last post on Buffy the Vampire Slayer + Averoigne Roleplaying. Sorry.
To kick things back off I thought I’d share my idea for a Slayer for the game. Since this is a theoretical exercise and I have no players I am making “pre-gens” for the game.
So if this is a game with a Slayer in it, who is the one girl in all the world? I thought about this question for some time, and considered several possibilities. Should she be noble or common? An orphan raised by an orphanage makes sense, but I didn’t like it. Then I had an idea, that the Slayer could be a character from one of the stories.
"A Rendezvous in Averoigne" is possibly the most frustrating of all the Averoigne stories. It’s incredibly atmospheric, and the inner skeleton of the plot is neat, but a lot of the story is nonsensical behavior. Also annoyingly there is a female character who is described as "madcap" who never says a single word, but is really just part of the stakes (no pun intended) for the story.
That got me thinking. According to Joss Whedon the core of the idea of Buffy is “What if the blonde girl in the alley with the vampires was a hero instead of a victim?” Well what if Fleurette, lover of the hero of “A Rendezvous in Averoigne” was a hero instead of just the stakes? And I got to thinking that I really loved that. Not only that, but while any story that interacts with an adventure is going to get altered by PC action this one would still be told the same way, because the narrator is Fleurette’s boyfriend!
So now I’ve got to figure out what Slayer Fleurette is like. According to the story she is the daughter of a well to do mercer and blonde. Also madcap. I’m seeing a role for the father as an NPC. He’s “New Money” and craves legitimacy and his daughter isn’t as cooperative as he would like with this project. And she makes the romance with a MUSICIAN! (If only he knew she was secretly fighting monsters.) Fleurette herself is a little bit wild. Maybe less reluctant than Buffy, because she’s very angry at monsters. Why? No doubt someone died. Her Mother? No, too cliché. Her older brother, who she worshipped? Just cliché enough. At this point I decide to make the stats to let that be a guide to the rest of her.
She’s obviously going to be built on the Hero template (more competence, but less Drama Points than the alternative White Hat template)
I don’t know if anybody reading this wants a detailed breakdown of how I went through the points or what things mean in game terms. So I’m going to talk about what I learned about Madamoiselle Cochin and provide her finished BtVS RPG stats. If anyone expresses interest in the details of creation/meaning of numbers I’ll do a followup post. This post will just have a couple of explanatory notes that illustrate where I am going with this character. I will note that Attributes are measured on a scale where normal humans rate 1-6 with 6’s being very rare. She’s a Slayer and her speed and strength are super-human.
One thing I added that has no connection to any detail in the story, mostly on a whim is photographic memory. She’s mostly, as I said, fairly wild and unrestrained, and her intelligence is only average, but I like the idea of everything being filed away. I pity her watcher.
The Love drawback represents the idea that she gets into romances and that this is a source of trouble for her. I don’t think that Gerard de l’Automne is an ongoing romance. In fact given that he left her voiceless in a story where she will almost certainly be the real hero, I wonder if he ends up as a real jerk. I do intend to stat him as a possible “Scooby” though.
Dependent in BtVS RPG terms doesn’t refer to a financial relationship, but rather to an NPC who complicates the PCs life by getting into trouble. Buffy in seasons 1-5 has her mother as a Dependent, Spider-Man has Aunt May, etc. Just like with Buffy and Joyce from a financial standpoint Fleurette depends on her father.

**A rename of the Teenager quality since the concept of the teenager doesn’t yet exist. I see her as sixteen or seventeen in the first season. I didn’t rename skills for this, but I couldn’t let Teenager stand. I dunno why.
So there we have a Slayer to contend with the vampires, incubi, and loup-Garou of Averoigne. See you next time, which hopefully will be less than a month from now.
